How to Use the Calculator

Here’s a quick guide to filling out each field of the calculator accurately so you can see your potential savings:

1. Enter Your Current Furnace’s Efficiency Rating (AFUE)

  • AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency—the percentage of fuel converted to heat by your model.
  • Your furnace’s AFUE is listed on the nameplate inside the furnace cabinet or on the unit’s exterior.
  • If you can’t find the nameplate, the AFUE will also be listed in your owner’s manual or you can search for it online.
  • Typically, furnaces over 15 years old are less than 78% efficient
  • Current furnaces in North America typically have AFUE ratings of 80-98%

2. Enter Your Energy Costs

  • Enter the amount of natural gas you used last month. You can find this on your most recent utility bill.

3. Enter Your Current Rate

  • Your current natural gas rate should be listed on your monthly bill. Look for a section that details the cost per unit or cost per therm (depending on who your provider is).
  • If you don’t have your bill handy, contact your natural gas provider or check their website.

4. Enter Your Current Maintenance Costs

  • Add up your service and repair bills from the last year, or click the button below for a ballpark estimate based on your furnace’s age.
  • On average, furnaces over 10 years old cost an extra $150 per year to service and repair.
  • Furnaces over 15 years typically cost an extra $250 per year to service and repair.

5. Enter The Cost of Your New Furnce

  • Do you have a furnace in mind to replace your current one? Enter the full cost here.
  • For perspective, Action Furnace offers furnaces for $6,900, $8,600, or $10,800.

If a new furnace would save you more than $250 per year (roughly $21 per month), replacing your furnace may be more cost-effective in the long term than keeping your current model. Furnace Calculator FAQ

Action Furnace gets a lot of questions about how to calculate furnace savings, so we’re here to give you the inside track on our process. Find answers to our most popular questions below, and contact us if you need more details!

How Accurate Is the Furnace Cost Calculator?

Our furnace cost calculator provides an estimate of your long-term savings, based on the information you supply. The accuracy of this calculator depends on the accuracy of your assumptions about your future usage habits and the costs of fuel in your area.

The most accurate way to predict how much you’ll save is to contact us directly, but if you’ve just started wondering about upgrading your furnace, this is a great place to start!

Action Furance’s cost calculator lets you see how much you’ll be able to offset the costs of upgrading your furnace with the energy savings the new model provides. This helps you make more informed decisions about the heating equipment you purchase for your home.

  • Furnace size: larger models use more energy to heat a home, leading to higher energy costs.
  • Efficiency rating: furnaces with higher AFUE ratings consume less energy, resulting in lower energy costs.
  • Fuel type: different fuels, such as natural gas, oil, and electricity, have different prices and efficiencies, affecting the overall costs of running the furnace.
  • Location: the heating requirements of each home vary based on the climate, with homes in colder climates requiring more energy to heat (for example, a home in Edmonton will use slightly more energy to run the furnace than a home in Calgary).
  • Usage: your costs will vary depending on how often and how long you run your furnace during the heating season.
  • Maintenance: proper maintenance, such as regular cleaning and tune-ups, can increase a furnace’s efficiency and reduce energy costs. Contact us for annual furnace tune-ups to keep your heating equipment at peak efficiency.

Insulation and sealing: air leaking from your home leads to energy waste and higher energy costs, whereas homes with better insulation levels require less energy to heat.

Four major factors make older furnaces less efficient than new ones:

  • Wear and tear: furnace components wear down over time, making the entire unit less efficient. For example, a dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow, which forces your furnace to work harder to heat your home.
  • Debris buildup: your furnace’s heat exchanger can become clogged with dirt, dust, and other debris over time. Regular maintenance can slow this process down, but after a decade some debris buildup is inevitable.
  • Inconsistent maintenance: annual tune-ups are key to maintaining your furnace’s efficiency as long as possible. Neglecting this service can accelerate component wear and debris buildup, causing your furnace to become less efficient faster.
  • Outdated technology: due to new technology and efficiency standards, older furnaces are never as efficient as newer models. Furnaces over 10 years old have an average efficiency rating (AFUE) of 78%, while the current furnaces we sell range from 80-98%.

Several factors help determine the precise efficiency of your furnace, including:

  • AFUE rating: the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating of a furnace shows how much of its fuel is converted into heat. Furnaces with higher AFUE ratings are more efficient and provide greater energy savings over time.
  • Size: a furnace that is too large or too small for the space it is heating will not operate at peak efficiency. Furnaces that are too large will cycle on and off frequently, while furnaces that are too small must work harder to heat your home.
  • Installation quality: your furnace must be installed by qualified professionals if you want it to run efficiently. Using us to install your new furnace is the best way to avoid the air leaks, incorrect sizing, and thermostat problems that can occur without expert help.
  • Maintenance and upkeep: regular maintenance is vital to keep your furnace operating at peak efficiency. Our furnace tune-ups start at $149 and include a comprehensive inspection of your furnace, as well as a cleaning of its components, filter maintenance, and safety control testing.
  • Ductwork: the condition and design of the ductwork in your home can also affect the efficiency of your furnace. Having your ducts cleaned regularly and partitioning them into different heating zones can improve your furnace’s efficiency.
  • Furnace age: older furnaces are less efficient than newer models, due to advances in technology and higher efficiency standards for newer models. Our new furnaces can be over 20% more efficient than furnaces over a decade old, resulting in significant long-term energy savings.

While a furnace that is over 10 years old may still run, it probably isn’t making the best possible use of your energy. That means you’re probably paying more per month to heat your home than you would if you upgraded to an energy-efficient new furnace.

10-years isn’t “must replace” territory, but if your furnace has been causing your consistent problems, it’s worth considering if a replacement is worth it.

Furnaces installed over a decade ago typically have an AFUE rating of under 78%, whereas new models can be anywhere from 80-98% efficient—a difference of up to 20%.

Since the typical monthly cost to heat a 1500 square foot Calgary home in the winter is between $150 and $300, upgrading your furnace could save $30-$60 per month.

You’ll spend much less on repairs for a new furnace than for an old one. The average annual cost of repairs is $XXX for a furnace over 10 years old and $XXX for a furnace older than 15 years old. New furnaces typically only require annual tune-ups for the first several years to keep them in optimal condition.
