Quick Troubleshooting for Your Air Conditioner

AC Coil

Ensure that your AC coil (usually located just above your furnace) isn’t frozen. If it is frozen, turn off the air conditioning unit so it can thaw.

Thermostat

Make sure your thermostat is set to the correct temperature. Your thermostat setting should be on “cool” to ensure that your thermostat alerts your air conditioner to run. Check that the thermostat batteries are working and replace them if needed.

Furnace Filter

When was the last time you changed your furnace filter? A dirty filter or restricted air movement in ducts could be preventing proper airflow. Change out your dirty filter for a clean filter.

Disconnect Box & AC Breaker

Check the disconnect box (located outside near your central air conditioner unit) to ensure that it is in the “on” position. Also, you need to ensure that the AC breaker on your electrical panel is also in the “on” position.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs

You can always contact our team with questions about AC repairs, service, or replacement. Here are some questions our customers often ask!

What Are the Signs My AC Is Broken?

The most obvious clue that your air conditioner is broken is…no cool air! But more subtle signs can also tell you something is wrong with your AC. These include:

  • Reduced airflow when your AC is turned on.
  • Strange smells or odours (musty) when your AC is operating.
  • Unusual or loud noises are coming from your air conditioner.
  • Higher energy bills than you’re used to.

Difficulty maintaining a constant temperature in your home.
If you notice any of these changes, it’s best to call Action Furnace for a diagnosis before the problems get worse.

Can I Prevent AC Repairs?

While some cooling repairs can’t be avoided, annual care and maintenance can reduce the risk of unforeseen problems. Annual Air Conditioner Tune-Ups give our professionals a chance to assess your home’s cooling system and recommend the best steps for comprehensive care.

Tune-ups not only prevent major AC repairs from occurring but also help increase the efficiency of your air conditioning system.

Should I Repair or Replace My Air Conditioner?

Sometimes, it might make more sense to replace your air conditioning system instead of paying for another repair. If your AC breaks down often, it might be time to get a new air conditioner. Consider the following when deciding to replace your air conditioner:

  • Is your air conditioner over 10 years old?
  • Does your unit require frequent repairs?
  • Are your energy bills climbing?
  • Is it difficult to cool your entire home with your current AC?

At Action Furnace, our pricing is ALWAYS upfront. Our AC technicians assess your broken air conditioner and help you decide on the best steps for keeping your home comfortable all summer.

Why Isn’t My AC Blowing Cool Air?

Getting to the bottom of an AC issue usually requires the help of a professional HVAC technician. Our experts run full diagnostics on your cooling system to determine the best way to get it working right.

But there are some things you can look for yourself to keep the cool air flowing freely. Check for the following while you’re waiting for one of our service techs:

  • Make sure your thermostat is at the right temperature and set to COOL mode.
  • Take a look at your AC filter. If it’s clogged or blocked, this can affect cooling.
  • When condenser coils are frozen, it can prevent them from properly cooling. If this is the case, turn off your air conditioner so the coils can thaw.
  • The register takes air back into your AC system. If this area is blocked or covered, it can affect air temperature.

What are some common problems with air conditioners?

Common problems with air conditioners include:

  • Low refrigerant levels
  • Clogged air filters
  • Dirty coils
  • Malfunctioning thermostats
  • Leaks in ductwork
  • Fan problems
  • Compressor failure

Our technicians are experienced at repairing all air conditioner problems, including the above. Contact Action Furnace if you’re having AC trouble and let us help.

How often should I have my air conditioner serviced?

We recommend having your air conditioner serviced at least once a year, typically in the spring before the cooling season begins. This will ensure your AC is ready to keep you comfortable when the weather warms up.

Can I fix my air conditioner myself?

We don’t recommend trying to repair your air conditioner yourself, since this can void your warranty and result in damage to your ductwork or other essential components. Always have your AC serviced by our licensed and insured professional contractors—Action Furnace has the experience needed to make sure your repairs are performed properly.

How much does it cost to repair an air conditioner?

The cost of repairing an air conditioner will vary depending on the type of problem, the age and condition of the system, and the cost of parts and labor. Most air conditioner repairs cost between $200 and $1,000—but Action Furnace will provide an accurate estimate for your specific project, and our No Surprise Guarantee ensures that we always stick to our quoted prices.

What should I do if my air conditioner is not working?

If your air conditioner is not working, you should first check the thermostat to ensure that it is set to the correct temperature and that the batteries are not dead. If the problem persists, contact Action Furnace and let one of our professional HVAC technicians perform the repairs.

How long does it take to repair an air conditioner?

The time it takes to repair an air conditioner varies depending on the type of problem, the age and condition of the system, and the availability of parts. Most repairs take between several hours and one day to complete. If solving your AC problem takes longer, we’ll let you know ahead of time so you know what to expect.
